Years lived in poorer health (life expectancy minus healthy life expectancy), council by council
Life expectancy minus healthy life expectancy: the years people in an area can expect to live, on average, in less than good health. Ranked within each nation and tier, on the average of men and women.
How to read these rankings. Rank 1 is the highest figure in the group. Councils with the same figure share a rank, marked “=”, and the next rank is skipped. Ranks describe the published estimates, not a verdict on a council.
Years in poorer health is Lifemap’s arithmetic on ONS figures, from the averages of men and women. ONS publishes no confidence interval for it and Lifemap does not calculate one, so these tables make no comparison with the national figure, and small differences between neighbouring councils may not be meaningful. The healthy life expectancy rankings show the figures for men and women with their intervals.

English districts (lower tier)
ONS’s annual healthy life expectancy series does not cover English districts, so there are no district figures to rank and no years in poorer health to calculate. Each district’s page shows its county’s annual figure, labelled as the county’s, and ONS’s separate census-based estimate for the district itself, which is not comparable with the annual series and is not ranked here.
